Sandhill Chinooks

Health

Io is in superb health.  Her eyes CERFed normal at around 7 weeks and again in January of 2007.  Her official OFA hip rating is "good."  We've seen no reactions to vaccines so far and no allergies or skin conditions.  Io's parents and all of her littermates have also exhibited no vaccine reactions, allergies, or skin conditions.

I have learned a great deal from others active in the Chinook breed and have always been impressed with the way many Chinook owners advocate full disclosure regarding potential health issues in the genetic backgrounds of their dogs.  These people work hard to make the breed as healthy as possible, and most breed for health before any other consideration such as temperament or conformation to the breed standard.  In that vein, although we see excellent health in Io and in both of her lines, there are reports of  seizures in some of her extended relatives on her dam's side.  Also, we have seen some cryptorchidism in her sire's line, but none of the pups in Io's litter had this.  Although it's not clear to what degree genetics are responsible for these conditions, they are issues we intend to to breed away from when choosing a sire for Io's litter, just as Io's own breeder sought to breed away from them when matching Jackson to Echo.
